Welcome to the weekly Insider Notes newsletter by Kimberly Brown - author of “Next Move, Best Move: Transitioning Into a Career You’ll Love,” Your Next Move Podcast host and founder of Brown Leadership™ (formerly Manifest Yourself®). I can literally feel my heart beating straight through my chest right now because I'm doing something equally new and scary. I'm relaunching my first book, "Next Move, Best Move: Transitioning Into a Career You'll Love". First, let me rip the bandaid off and start with why. To date, I've sold 3,948 print copies of my book, but in order to position myself for a second book deal, I need to sell at least 10,000 print copies. I'm not making this number up either; it's the feedback I've received from agents I've wanted to work with when they turned me down due to low book sales on my first book. Since my online audience is significantly larger than the number of books sold, it's screaming loud and clear that I may not have an audience that likes to purchase books, which I know is not true. While I thought I had a robust marketing plan when my book launched in 2021, I had no idea what I was up against. (I also didn't know that Kindle and Audible sales "don't count" when publishers and agents are looking to sign you as an author - but that's a story for another day.) If I'm honest, I feel ashamed, embarrassed, and like a failure writing this email and admitting that the sales of my book were "okay" at best when compared to the goals and impact I want my work to have. But wallowing in that isn't going to help. The truth will. My truth: My book is an amazing body of work that more people need to know about because it can literally change the trajectory of their career. And if I knew what I know now about book sales, I would have done so much more when it launched and in the subsequent years after publishing. Lucky for me, it's not too late. I'm relaunching the book with 5 Career Transformation Bundles that provide you (and your friends, network, or office!) with multiple copies of my book and bonuses like:

This is going to be a journey for me -- to sell 6,052 print copies of my book in the next few months -- but I'm honestly excited. Reader, Let me guess: you've sat through at least one virtual presentation where the speaker was framed like they were in witness protection. Camera pointing up their nose. Terrible lighting. Background that looked like a crime scene. You could barely see their face, let alone connect with what they were saying. And here's what kills me: that speaker probably had brilliant content. They might have spent hours preparing. But because they treated the technical setup as an afterthought, their...
Reader, I need to tell you something that might surprise you. When I first started developing my public speaking skills over a decade ago, I thought the benefit would be simple: I'd be less nervous when presenting. Maybe I'd sound more confident in meetings. That's it. That was the extent of my expectations. But what actually happened? The ripple effects went so far beyond what I imagined. I'm talking about: Getting pulled aside by a provost who said "you sound like a leader" when I wasn't...
Reader, Have you ever watched another speaker and thought, "I need to be more like THEM"? Maybe they were hilarious and you thought, "I'm not funny enough."Or they had this massive transformation story and you thought, "My story isn't dramatic enough."Or they were polished and perfect and you thought, "I'll never be that smooth." Here's what I've learned after 15+ years of speaking: The most powerful speakers aren't the ones trying to be everything. They're the ones who know exactly what type...
