How to build a speaking application that stands out (10 of 12)

Hi Reader,

Welcome back to my special email-only series: Highly Visible, Highly Booked: Upgrade your stages, increase your leads, and grow your income.

This series is specifically for coaches and consultants, and it’s the kickoff to my upcoming launch of The Visibility Shift. If you want my help increasing your speaking bookings and conversions through high-visibility speaking engagements, join the TVS waitlist here.

When you fill out a speaking application, your goal is not to prove that you are accomplished.

Your goal is to make the organizer want your session on their agenda.

Those are not the same thing.

When I review a speaking application, I use a simple FIT Test:

F — Fit: Does this topic belong on this particular agenda?
I — Impact: Is it clear what the audience will walk away knowing or doing?
T — Trust: Does your experience give the organizer a reason to trust you with the topic?

Your credentials matter, but they should support the presentation. They should not become the presentation.

Start with the topic. Can someone read the title and immediately understand what problem you are addressing?

Then look at the description. Does it sound like something written for the actual people who will be sitting in the room, or does it sound like a paragraph copied from your professional bio?

Your takeaways matter too. I want them to tell me what the audience will understand, decide, or be able to do after your session. This is where specificity helps you.

“Participants will learn how to become better leaders” could mean almost anything.

A stronger application makes the organizer picture the session. They can see why their audience needs it and what the audience will leave with.

And if the application asks why you should be the person teaching the topic, connect your experience directly to the session. Do not make them connect the dots for you.

This is also why I want you building one strong presentation before you start creating five.

When the topic is clear and you have had a chance to present it repeatedly, you learn what lands. You collect stronger audience feedback. You improve the examples. You begin getting footage and testimonials.

Then every future application has better proof behind it.

And even if you have not spoken on dozens of major stages yet, a strong application can still make it easy for the organizer to understand why your session belongs on their agenda.

In my roadmap for TVS and 1:1 clients, I have speakers begin with a signature workshop before moving into a signature keynote and a broader set of paid offers. The repetition is part of the process.

The goal is not to sound impressive in the application.

The goal is to make your session feel like an obvious fit for the room.

Inside The Visibility Shift, we work on the speaker positioning, presentations, and pitches that help you do exactly that so you can submit an application that makes the organizer picture your session on the agenda before they ever get to your bio.
